Things You Can Do To Mitigate Against Flooding
Flood Wall Around a Hospital in Binghamton, NY
According to Sandra Knight on the FEMA website, Flooding is the nation's number one natural disaster, and it can occur inland, along the coast, and across every region of the country. Even though you may think your community has little or no risk of flooding, the reality is that anywhere it rains, it can flood. In fact, roughly 25% of all flood insurance claims are filed in low to moderate flood risk areas. It is important to keep in mind that the risk of flooding isn't based only on your community's history, but ion a variety of factors like rainfall, topography, river-flow and tidal-surge data and changes resulting from new construction in your community. Those all play a part in what actual flood risk you face.
There are flood proofing measures you can take to help prevent or minimize the impact of flooding on your home and its contents. A few examples include:
- Elevate your furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home.
- Install check valves to prevent water from backing up into the drains of your home
- When practical, homeowners can construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering your home
- Seal the basement walls with waterproofing compounds.
Should your home or business flood from storms or other reasons SERVPRO of Barrington/North Schaumburg is here 24/7 to help. Please feel free to contact us in the event of an emergency or to come out and assess you risks in the event of a flood. Our contact phone number is (847) 526-0090.

Air Duct Cleaning for Homes and Businesses in Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates and Barrington
Clean Ducts are Healthy and Save Energy
Saving Energy With Air Duct Cleaning:
The air ducts in either a home or business building need maintenance and care in order to get the most out of your heating and cooling systems. Cleaning your air ducts on a regular basis gets dust, dirt and mold removed from system and thus causes the system to work more efficiently. Removing these foreign objects in your air ducts means the ducts will have far less obstructions and will allow the air to flow more freely and without as much energy. Any blockage, major or minor means the the system needs to work harder to circulate the air throughout your property. Without question air duct cleaning helps save energy but how do you know if you need to have them professionally cleaned?
Mold Growth: If you notice a moldy or musty smell coming from your air ducts there is a good chance that you have a mold infestation. Mold can develop when moisture gets caught in the air ducts, so it is imperative that an HVAC technician insects them.
Rodent Droppings or Insect Bodies: If you notice either of these things in your air ducts it probably calls for cleaning. Having these droppings in your ducts means that air is being circulated throughout your home or business and that insects could be nested in your air ducts.
Duct Blockage: If you notice a large amour of dirt or debris in your ducts it is a sign that your ducts should be cleaned.

Barrington and Palatine - Why is Mold Growing in the Crawlspace or Basement
Palatine IL Basement Mold
Mold cannot grow without moisture or high humidity, so a thorough investigation is necessary to determine the cause of elevated moisture in the crawlspace or basement. In most cases several minor conditions have contributed to creating an major problem.
- Gutter and downspout extensions. For every 1,500 square feet of roof and one inch of rain 1,000 gallons of water drain off the roof. If gutters do not catch the water or the downspout extensions do not carry the water at least 6 feet away, all of that rain water can find its way into the crawlspace or basement.
- The drainage of the yard is sloped back toward the home and drains rainwater back into the crawlspace or basement.
- The condensate drain form the HVAC system can deposit up to 20 gallons of water per day and is sometimes dumped at the edge of the foundation.
- A small unnoticed plumbing leak.
- Foundation cracks can allow groundwater into the crawlspace or basement.
- Rain penetrations through the building envelope such as the seam where a porch joins the home, window or door openings, improperly installed siding or unsealed building exteriors.
- Dryer vents improperly ducted can introduce warm humid air into the crawlspace or basement.
Please call SERVPRO of Barrington/North Schaumburg at (847) 526-0090 for information about mold remediation for your crawlspace or basement.
