Safety Tips for Patio Heaters

7/26/2023 (Permalink)

Outdoor patio heater with a white background. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

SERVPRO of Barrington / North Schaumburg responds to commercial fire damage emergencies throughout the year. More businesses are using propane heaters to keep customers and employees warm on chilly days and nights. Here is some information from the National Fire Protection Association for using outdoor propane heaters safely:

Propane Patio Heaters

For patio heaters that use integral LP-Gas containers with a capacity greater than 1.08 lb. (0.49 kg), NFPA 1 requires that the heaters be listed by an organization acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Propane heaters need to be used in accordance with their listing and manufacturer instructions. Prior to using a propane heater, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for information such as the following:

  • Necessary clearances from the heating element
  • Proper ventilation required
  • Proper inspection, cleaning, and maintenance procedures
  • Lighting and shutdown procedures
  • Where the heater can and cannot be used (for example, heaters cannot be used in enclosed locations)
  • Procedures for properly storing heaters

The restrictions for using propane heaters are also based on the occupancy in which they are used. For example, in assembly occupancies, such as restaurants with 50 or more occupants, heaters cannot be located within 5 ft (1.5 m) of the exits. Regardless of where they are used, if a heater uses propane hoses, they must be as short as possible, visible, and protected from damage.

Generator Safety Tips

4/14/2022 (Permalink)

Black storm clouds with white lightning strikes. Follow these safety tips to stay safe during a power outage.

Springtime in the Midwest can bring rain, wind, and storms.  Downed utility lines, power company blackouts, heavy winds, or thunderstorms can all lead to power outages.  Portable generators offer a temporary solution. Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) about generator safety:

  • Generators should be used in well ventilated locations outside at least 5 feet away from all doors, windows, and vent openings. Measure the 5-foot distance from the generator exhaust system to the building.
  • Never use a generator in an attached garage, even with the door open.
  • Place generators so that exhaust fumes can’t enter the home through windows, doors, or other openings in the building. The exhaust must be directed away from the building.
  • Make sure to install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for correct placement and mounting height.
  • Turn off generators and let them cool down before refueling. Never refuel a generator while it is hot.
  • Store fuel for the generator in a container that is intended for the purpose and is correctly labeled as such. Store the containers outside of living areas.

Tips to Stay Safe around the Pool

Pool and hot tub with a house in the background. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

Springtime in the Midwest brings thoughts of warmer weather and outdoor activities.  As we start to dream of floating in the pool or sitting in the hot tub, we also need the be aware of electrical hazards while enjoying the water.  Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association on how to stay safe around swimming pools, hot tubs and spas.

  • If you are putting in a new pool, hot tub, or spa, be sure the wiring is performed by an electrician experienced in the special safety requirements for these types of installations.
  • Outdoor receptacles must have covers that keep them dry even when appliances are plugged into them.
  • Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) are special devices designed to protect against electric shock and electrocution. They are required for most pool, spa, or hot tub equipment. They may be in the form of an outlet or a circuit breaker.
  • Electrical appliances, equipment, and cords should be kept at least 6 feet away from the water. When possible, use battery operated appliances and equipment, such as televisions, radios, and stereos.
  • Avoid handling electrical devices when you are wet.
  • Do not swim during a thunderstorm.
  • Have a qualified electrician show you how to turn off all power in case of an emergency.

Fireplace Safety Tips

2/28/2022 (Permalink)

Stone fireplace with a big fire burning. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

There is nothing like warming up by a fire in the fireplace, but a dirty chimney can cause a house fire.  Creosote is a black or brown residue that can build up over time and could cause a fire.  It is important to make sure that your chimney is clean and safe for a fire.

Follow these tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for preventing creosote buildup that can cause chimney fires:

Limited air supply and unseasoned wood encourage the buildup of creosote. To avoid that buildupdo not restrict the air supply by:

  • Closing the glass doors
  • Not opening the damper wide enough
  • The longer the smoke is in the flue, the more likely it is that creosote will form
  • Do not burn unseasoned wood

Fireplace Safety

  • Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out
  • Do not burn paper in your fireplace
  • Put ashes in a metal container with a lid, outside, at least three feet from your home
  • Put the fire out before you go to sleep or leave your home

Safety Tips for your Microwave

Kitchen with a microwave in a blue island with wood floors. SERVPRO of Barrington / North Schaumburg provides 24-hour service for any fire damage emergency.

The microwave oven is a great kitchen appliance that provides a quick and easy way to reheat a meal or warm up a cup of coffee.  It is always important to follow a few tips to prevent burns or a possible fire.

Here are some microwave safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Purchase a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way, the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall on the product.
  • Plug the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet — never use an extension cord
  • Make sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users
  • Open food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam or the food itself can cause burns.
  • Food heats unevenly in microwave ovens. Stir and test before eating or giving to children.
  • Never heat a baby bottle in the microwave. Since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, leading to burns.

Safety Tips for Cooking with Oil

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

Deep fryer with hot oil and an orange SERVPRO logo. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

Deep fry day is a favorite day in our household.  This is a day that we deep fry all types of food.  We start in the morning with homemade doughnuts and end the day with deep-fried twinkies.  Safety is always on our mind as we work with the hot oil in the Kitchen.  Here are some cooking safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

Safety considerations for cooking with oil

  • Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stovetop.
  • Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner and/or carefully remove the pan from the burner. Smoke is a danger sign that the oil is too hot.
  • Heat the oil slowly to the temperature you need for frying or sautéing.
  • Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil does not splatter.
  • Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water on the fire.
  • If the fire does not go out or you don’t feel comfortable sliding a lid over the pan, get everyone out of your home. Call the fire department from outside.

Stay Safe While Traveling - Hotel & Motel Safety Tips

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

Hotel room with one bed a table in the background. Keep these safety tips in mind when traveling.

Vacations and business travel make hotels and motels our home away from home. It is just as important to be prepared and know what you would do in a hotel/motel emergency as it is in your own home.  Here are a few tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to stay safe while traveling:

  • Choose a hotel/motel that is protected by both smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system.
  • When you check in, ask the front desk what the fire alarm sounds like.
  • When you enter your room, review the escape plan posted in your room.
  • Take the time to find the exits and count the number of doors between your room and the exit. Make sure the exits are unlocked. If they are locked, report it to management right away.
  • Keep your room key by your bed and take it with you if there is a fire.
  • If the alarm sounds, leave right away, closing all doors behind you. Use the stairs — never use elevators during a fire.
  • If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit.

Taking out the garbage, sweeping the floor, and doing laundry are just a few daily chores that you may perform during a normal day. Burning match with an orange flame on a black background. It is important to teach children about fire safety.

SERVPRO of Barrington / North Schaumburg has responded to many types of fire damage and we know that it is never too early to teach children about fire safety. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), some children play with fire out of curiosity, boredom, or peer pressure and do not realize the danger fire poses. Each year children cause fires that result in hundreds of injuries and millions of dollars in damage. Here are some safety tips from NFPA to keep your family safe:

  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children, up high, preferably in a locked cabinet
  • Closely supervise children, making sure that they are kept away from other fire sources, including lit candles, cigarettes, bonfires, and stoves
  • It is natural for young children to be curious and ask questions about fire, play with fire trucks, or pretend to cook. Use these opportunities to teach them about fire safety
  • Explain that fire moves very fast and can hurt as soon as it touches them. Tell them that this is why matches and lighters are tools for adults only
  • Establish clear rules and consequences about unsupervised and unauthorized uses of fire

Special Smoke Alarms for Hearing Impaired People

4/19/2021 (Permalink)

White smoke alarm with a black background. Special smoke alarms are available for hearing impaired people.

Working smoke alarms save lives.  However, people who are deaf or hard of hearing may not be able to depend on the traditional smoke alarm to alert them to a fire.  The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers these safety tips for hearing impaired people:

  • Smoke alarms and alert devices are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Strobe lights that flash when the smoke alarm sounds. The lights warn people of a possible fire
  • When people who are deaf are asleep, a pillow or bed shaker can wake them so they can escape. The shaker is activated by the sound of a smoke alarm
  • When people who are hard of hearing are asleep, an alert device that uses a loud, mixed, low-pitched sound can wake them. They may find a pillow or bed shaker helpful. These devices are triggered by the sound of the smoke alarm
  • Research the products and select the ones that best meet your needs

White power outlet on a white wall. SERVPRO of Barrington / North Schaumburg is always ready to help with any size fire damage.

Think about how often we use electricity during a normal day.  We may start our day by turning off an alarm clock and then heading to the kitchen to plug in the coffee maker.  That is just the beginning of all the things around the house that we use on a daily basis.  Electricity makes our lives easier however, we need to keep safety in mind.  Here are a few safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

  • Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician.
  • When you are buying or remodeling a home, have it inspected by a qualified private inspector or in accordance with local requirements.
  • Only use one heat-producing appliance (such as a coffee maker, toaster, space heater, etc.) plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time.
  • Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, microwave ovens, etc.) should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used.
  • Use ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of shock. GFCIs shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and basements. All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected.

SERVPRO employee talking to a customer at the bottom of the stairs in the living room. If you are in need of fire cleanup services. SERVPRO of Barrington / North Schaumburg can help!

After the fire trucks leave, your home likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts.  SERVPRO of Barrington / North Schaumburg have the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition.

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.  The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us.  Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage.  This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs.  To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water.  We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire.  We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition.  We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition.  Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Tips for Candle Safety in your Home

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

A white candle burning with a black background. Please use caution when using candles in your home.

Candles may be pretty to look at and provide a great fragrance in your home, but they can also be a cause of a house fire.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, 3 out of every 5 candle fires start when things that can burn are placed too close to the candle.  Here are some tips that you should follow for candle safety:

  • Blow out candles before leaving a room or going to bed
  • Keep candles one foot away from anything that can burn
  • Use a sturdy candle holder, that will not tip over easily
  • Put candle holders on a sturdy and unclutter surface
  • Light candles carefully, keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame
  • Do not let the candle burn all the way to the bottom; put it out before it gets too close to the container or holder
  • You should not light a candle if oxygen is used in the home
  • During a power outage, use a flashlight or battery-operated lighting instead of a candle

Remember candles are an open flame which means they can easily ignite.  As an alternative, consider using flameless candles.

If you have any additional questions about fire or smoke damage, please feel free to contact SERVPRO of Barrington / North Schaumburg at (847) 526-0090.

The Chicago Fire

Although it has never been proven, many people attribute the starting of the Chicago Fire of 1871 to Mrs. O’Leary’s family cow knocking over a lighted lantern. We pet owners love our furry friends, but did you know that these little rascals are responsible for causing 750 home fires each year in the United States? According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), pets and wild animals are responsible for starting fires by exposure to:

  • Cooking equipment
  • Fireplaces
  • Chimneys
  • Space heaters
  • Lamps
  • Bulbs
  • Wiring
  • Candles

SERVPRO® of Barrington/North Schaumburg offers some safety tips to North Barrington from the NFPA to help prevent your pets from starting a fire at home:

  • Pets may bump into, turn on, or knock over cooking equipment so keep them away from stoves and countertops.
  • Keep pets away from candles, lamps, and space heaters.
  • Use a heat-tempered glass screen on a fireplace and keep it in place.
  • Keep pets away from chimney’s outside vents.
  • Create a “pet-free zone” of at least three feet away from the fireplace.
  • Use battery-operated, flameless candles.
  • Keep pets away from electrical cords that they might want to chew.
  • Make sure your pets are included in your emergency evacuation plan.

Lingering After-Effects: Soot and Smoke

Even when fires are easy for individuals to extinguish, they often leave soot on the ceilings and walls, or smoke that stays in upholstery or textiles. Smoke and soot continue to cause damage until they are removed. Soot corrodes metal, stone, brick, and other materials. Incorrect cleaning can set smoke or soot odors into material, making a later cleaning much more expensive and difficult than an earlier, correct cleaning.

SERVPRO of Barrington/North Schaumburg has the equipment and the training to remove soot and smoke and their odors. Our technicians know where to look for hidden deposits of soot so the particles will not corrode the building structure nor the books, furniture, art, or other fixtures and belongings. SERVPRO of Barrington/North Schaumburg will clean and restore Hoffman Estates property "Like it never even happened."®

What is a Puffback?

12/4/2019 (Permalink)

Photo of an interior wall covered in soot The aftermath of a puffback isn’t pretty.

Furnace Puffbacks

A furnace puffback is when an explosion happens inside the burner chamber of a furnace. A puffback can cause quite a lot of damage to the heating system, let alone your family’s home. When a puffback does occur, it spits back a fine layer of soot all throughout your home that is very tedious to clean and should be left to the professionals at SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg.

What causes a puffback? It can be caused by a multitude of things, but most often it is caused by a lack of maintenance or cleaning of the furnace. Meaning, maintaining a dust-free oil heating system is imperative. Make sure you inspect your furnace annually and be on the lookout for strange noises or oil leaks and soot backup. If these things are occurring, make sure you have your system checked out by an HVAC technician.

If your furnace does produce a puffback and your Inverness area home is left in a sheet of soot- SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg has the equipment, experience, and knowledge to return your home back to its pre-puffback condition. Remember, we are here to help 24/7/365 to make fire/smoke/soot damage “Like it never even happened.”

Possible Causes of House Fires Around the Holidays

12/3/2019 (Permalink)

Photo of a safe home, decorated for the holidays with the fireplace going Keep Your Holidays Full of Cheer by Staying Safe

When we investigate the causes of house fires during the holidays, most people think of leaving the stove on after cooking, leaving candles lit at night, etc. However, when we delve deeper into the possibilities, that’s where we start to think about causes that didn’t initially come to mind.

Things such as the logs and embers from a fireplace escaping and spreading after not being properly extinguished. Also, because of the low temperature outside, we are forced into using electric gas heaters which can easily fail, combust or overheat. Ducted heating is another big issue that some people run into. If a filter or airway isn’t properly cleaned or emptied, the dust particles and buildup can ignite causing the ducts in the roof to engulf into flame. Electric blankets are also a common cause, a poorly manufactured one can overheat very easily, setting alight bed covers, clothing and even furniture.

Another cause one might not think of is cell phones and electronics, especially those on or near a bed whilst charging. The heat generated from the charging battery can expose a fire risk as they dissipate heat while charging- making them a possible cause of a house fire. This can also be a year-round cause, but people are more likely to be in bed, under warm covers using their phones throughout the winter. The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, but remember to not let that distract you from thinking of fire prevention.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/15/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Barrington/North Schaumburg will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
