We added the Certified: SERVPRO® Cleaned program in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Certified: SERVPRO® Cleaned is preventive cleaning program that greatly reduces the risk of spreading bacterial or viral infections (such as COVID-19).
Fortunately, we were prepared at SERVPRO of Barrington/North Schaumburg to offer this program. We started using hospital-grade cleaning and disinfection procedures long before this emergency. Our solutions and techniques meet the approval of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The Certified: SERVPRO® Cleaned program includes displays and electronic notices to let customers or clients know that your business is working to reduce the spread of diseases among employees and among the community.
SERVPRO of Barrington/North Schaumburg Cleans and Disinfects All Surfaces
While we pay extra attention to high touch surfaces such as banisters and card readers, we also clean and disinfect surfaces that are hidden from view, such as air ducts (from which germs can spread) and from behind equipment. Germs go where the air goes, so we are don’t want to miss any spots.
Clean means to get rid of visible dirt or other contaminants. A good scrubbing does kill most germs, but not all. Getting rid of all the germs requires disinfection.
Disinfect means to kill any remaining germs, with germs including bacteria, viruses, and other microbial contaminants. Our technicians know which disinfectant to use on what materials, and how long to let them work.
Disinfection Came Before Germ Theory
It makes sense that the big push for disinfectants came after the realization that there were germs to kill, but the idea of disinfection came earlier than that realization.
Ignaz Semmelweis, a physician in 1840s Vienna, was among the early proponents of antisepsis before the idea of sepsis arose. He and others (such as Florence Nightingale, a statistician, and a pioneer in nursing), he believed that dirt, blood, or something caused illness. He ordered students to wash their hands and disinfect them (in carbolic acid) before assisting women in births. The death rate dropped dramatically (to under 2%).
