Fire Evacuation Plans for Your Business

12/6/2019 (Permalink)

photo of a commercial space experiencing fire/smoke Know what to do if disaster strikes.

Safety First

Everyone should know exactly what to do in the event of a fire.  A proper evacuation plan for your business is important for several reasons. Whether you are a restaurant owner, contractor or manufacturer, you should be well prepared.

To prepare for the eventuality of a fire, it is not enough to have fire extinguishers (although this is a good start). You should take all possible preventive measures to avoid a fire, but also put a place a plan in case of disaster. Start by imagining possible scenarios and then create a plan that addresses each one.

Establish roles and responsibilities, such appointing an inhouse Chief fire warden. This employee has overall responsibility for a fire event. Next you must make sure you have a communication plan. Designate someone such as an assistant fire warden whose primary job is to disseminate information to all if a fire did occur. Make sure the meeting points are far away from the building and train staff on the protocols and procedures to follow in the event of a fire.

Once all are evacuated, a designated employee needs to check that all employees are out of the building and accounted for. In addition to setting up a plan in the event of a fire, you can take other steps in your business to reduce the risk of such a disaster. Regularly inspect your tools, clean your equipment well, and do it often. Make sure all heating equipment is installed and maintained by a technician.

What are Ice Dams?

12/5/2019 (Permalink)

Photo of icicles on the edge of a roof with snow collected behind it, the signs of an ice dam issue Know what to look for when it comes to a possible ice dam.

Understanding Ice Dams

During the winter and stormy months, you may experience an ice dam. Ice dams are the formation of ice on the top edge of a house or building that prevents melting snow from draining off the roof. Ice dams happen because your home generates heat, and this heat naturally melts the snow on the shingles which then turns into water. The water then freezes on the edges of the roof due to the weather being so cold and the eaves not receiving any heat because it is hanging off the side of the house. The ice dam then traps snow onto the roof, which can cause the inside of your home once it starts to melt with nowhere to go but down into the shingles.

If trapped melted snow does make its way through your shingles and into your home- that’s when it can cause water damage. In order to prevent these issues and stop ice dams from forming, one can remove snow from the roof. When removing the ice and snow from the roof, do not use an ax or sharp object as it could do more damage. Instead, you should use an object like a mallet. After the snow and ice have been removed, the gutters and downspouts need to be cleared. If you fall victim to an ice dam which then leads to water damage inside of your home, call SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg.

Tips for Preventing Your Pipes from Freezing

12/5/2019 (Permalink)

example photo of a frozen pipe that has cracked, meaning when it starts to unfreeze there will be water spilling out Be sure to keep an eye on your pipes this winter!

Prevention is Key

During the wintertime, we see the most water losses from pipes that freeze over and then burst. SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg is here to provide you with a few tips this season to keep this from happening.

  1. Let the water Drip from the faucet. Running water through the pipes, even in small amounts, helps prevent them from freezing over.
  2. The thermostat; make sure to keep a close eye on it as the temperature alert threshold for when pipes start freezing is around 20 degrees.
  3. Keep your cabinets open. A good amount of your pipes are under cabinets, so keep the doors open so the warmth of the house can keep your pipes warmer.
  4. Seal all openings around any exposed piping, especially if that opening is letting in cold air.
  5.  Make sure areas such as your basement and attic are well insulated to keep pipes warm. Pipes can also be fitted with foam rubber to help reduce the chances of freezing.

Keep your pipes on your mind this winter. Check them regularly and follow these tips. If you do find yourself with a burst frozen pipe leaving you with water damage, remember the trained technicians at SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg are here for you 24/7/365. Even if you’ve just got questions, please give us a call at (847) 526-0090. We're always here to help!

SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg Can Properly Handle Any Disaster

Whenever a biohazard occurs, it is imperative that the cleanup is done by trained professionals like our experienced technicians at SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg. A biohazard is when items or locations have been contaminated with hazardous waste, such as vomit, blood, feces, and other bodily fluids. Other forms of biohazard are animal waste, used needles, and anatomical waste. For the biohazardous articles to be disposed of appropriately, a person must be properly trained on how to handle the waste to ensure it is safely away from the general public. For example, individuals in the medical field are trained on how to place syringes and other items that can poke through skin in a sharps container. Also, all items that contain biohazard waste must be disposed of appropriately.

Our trained technicians not only know the protocols, but also are wearing protective equipment like personal protective clothing, gloves, and goggles. Anyone who tries to dispose of biohazardous materials without proper training or personal protective equipment (PPE) is risking numerous safety issues. One of these issues is legal as there are laws about how one must deal with such materials, including guidelines from OSHA. Certain diseases that a person has can be transmitted through biohazard waste. Therefore, it is imperative that biohazard cleanups are left to the professionals at SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg. If you are in need of a biohazard cleanup, call us today at (847) 526-0090.

What is a Puffback?

12/4/2019 (Permalink)

Photo of an interior wall covered in soot The aftermath of a puffback isn’t pretty.

Furnace Puffbacks

A furnace puffback is when an explosion happens inside the burner chamber of a furnace. A puffback can cause quite a lot of damage to the heating system, let alone your family’s home. When a puffback does occur, it spits back a fine layer of soot all throughout your home that is very tedious to clean and should be left to the professionals at SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg.

What causes a puffback? It can be caused by a multitude of things, but most often it is caused by a lack of maintenance or cleaning of the furnace. Meaning, maintaining a dust-free oil heating system is imperative. Make sure you inspect your furnace annually and be on the lookout for strange noises or oil leaks and soot backup. If these things are occurring, make sure you have your system checked out by an HVAC technician.

If your furnace does produce a puffback and your home is left in a sheet of soot- SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg has the equipment, experience, and knowledge to return your home back to its pre-puffback condition. Remember, we are here to help 24/7/365 to make fire/smoke/soot damage “Like it never even happened.”

The Different Types of Storms

12/3/2019 (Permalink)

Photo of storm conditions on the road When a Storm is Near, Remember SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg is here.

Blizzards and Hurricanes and Tornadoes- Oh My!

There are numerous different types of storms, including blizzards, dust storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Some storms are similar, such as blizzards and dust storms. Both involve high winds moving many small particles through the air (snow for snowstorms and dust for dust storms). However, a dust storm is more likely in an arid location like a desert- we don’t see these in Barrington. While a dust storm may lead to breathing and lung difficulties if the dust is consumed over long periods of time, a blizzard can lead to hypothermia or frostbite if out in the elements for too long of a time.

Tornadoes and hurricanes are both high wind events leading to damage of property as they form in cylindrical patterns. With these storms, in addition to the high winds causing property damage as they push and move property around, they both can lead to heavy rain and flooding. The severe weather we see in Barrington are mostly that of tornadoes and blizzards. With winter approaching, remember that blizzards impact driving and could lead to treacherous travel conditions, and extreme cold weather health issues.

No matter what kind of storm hits, SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg is here for your storm damage restoration needs. As always, remember that when it comes to dangerous weather conditions and storm alerts- SAFETY FIRST.

Possible Causes of House Fires Around the Holidays

12/3/2019 (Permalink)

Photo of a safe home, decorated for the holidays with the fireplace going Keep Your Holidays Full of Cheer by Staying Safe

When we investigate the causes of house fires during the holidays, most people think of leaving the stove on after cooking, leaving candles lit at night, etc. However, when we delve deeper into the possibilities, that’s where we start to think about causes that didn’t initially come to mind.

Things such as the logs and embers from a fireplace escaping and spreading after not being properly extinguished. Also, because of the low temperature outside, we are forced into using electric gas heaters which can easily fail, combust or overheat. Ducted heating is another big issue that some people run into. If a filter or airway isn’t properly cleaned or emptied, the dust particles and buildup can ignite causing the ducts in the roof to engulf into flame. Electric blankets are also a common cause, a poorly manufactured one can overheat very easily, setting alight bed covers, clothing and even furniture.

Another cause one might not think of is cell phones and electronics, especially those on or near a bed whilst charging. The heat generated from the charging battery can expose a fire risk as they dissipate heat while charging- making them a possible cause of a house fire. This can also be a year-round cause, but people are more likely to be in bed, under warm covers using their phones throughout the winter. The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, but remember to not let that distract you from thinking of fire prevention.

Duct Cleaning in Commercial Spaces

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

Photo of commercial ductwork It’s Important to Maintain Clean Ducts in Your Commercial Buildings

Why is Commercial Duct Cleaning Important?

When visiting a business, a person should be able to assume they are in a clean environment, and that includes having clean air. For the air to be ideal, the ductwork for the heating and air conditioning unit must be clean.

There are numerous reasons to have clean ducts, but the most important is the air quality in the establishment. If you have dirty ducts, particles that settle in the ductwork can be sent throughout the building which can increase the number of bacteria, mildew and other irritants. Without proper and regular duct cleaning, diseases can spread, people with breathing difficulties can have more problems, and there could be an increase in odors as smells are spread throughout the business.

It benefits the company to keep the ductwork clean as it improves the lifespan of the heating and air conditioning units as fewer things blow into them and they have increased airflow to keep all parts working properly. Also, if the ductwork is clean, the unit will run more efficiently.

When the ducts are clean it makes the air more breathable, the unit will last longer, and it saves money on energy. When they are not clean and properly maintained, it leads to disease, smells, more energy usage, and more equipment malfunctions.

If your Barrington, Inverness, Schaumburg, Lake Zurich or Deer Park commercial space needs a proper duct cleaning, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg today at 847-526-0090.

Photo of mold growth on a wall Never handle mold alone, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg.

Leave Mold Cleanup & Restoration to the Professionals

Mold can grow just about anywhere if the environment is right. It thrives in dark places that are moist and warm. Mold is commonly found where there are leaks, where condensation builds up, or in areas with poor ventilation. It’s very common that you might have mold in your home from previous moisture exposure, and you are unaware. It is wise to check in hard to reach areas, such as in crawl spaces and in the attic.

If found, mold not only damages your home’s structure and contents, but it can also negatively affect your health. It is especially dangerous for people with allergies or breathing problems, as mold can produce allergens and irritants. Unfortunately, some of these can be toxic and can make people sick. Trying to clean or remediate mold and mold damage yourself may prove to be tricky. You might think you got rid of the problem, but most times one lacks the proper knowledge to remove the mold correctly and permanently, and the problem will persist.

SERVPRO of Barrington/ North Schaumburg will not only remediate the mold but more importantly, we are able to find where the actual source (often moisture) is coming from. Our trained professionals will then be able to fix the problem once and for all. If the mold has already caused structural damage, we are more than capable of restoring your property to its pre-mold condition.
